The FlareLab Workshop: Custom Kuromi Fan PC Grill
This custom Kuromi fan PC grill project was created for a client who wanted to add personality and character styling to their computer build. Instead of using a standard metal grill, the goal was to produce a decorative yet functional fan cover that protects the blades while turning the cooling setup into a visual highlight.
The design features layered character artwork integrated into a circular fan grill frame sized for standard PC fan mounting points. Because decorative grills must still allow proper airflow, spacing and cutout balance were carefully checked so the character silhouette would not overly restrict ventilation while still reading clearly from a distance.
To achieve the multi color look, the print plan was organized by layers and parts rather than painted after printing. This keeps edges crisp and colors consistent, while reducing finishing time. Tolerances were tuned so the character insert fits cleanly inside the grill ring without warping or lift, even on thinner sections like ears and small detail features.
Structural thickness was adjusted across the frame to prevent flex during screw mounting. Mount holes were reinforced to handle repeated installation and removal, which is common in PC case modding. Surface settings were also optimized so the visible front face prints smooth and display ready straight off the bed.
The final result is a themed PC fan grill that functions as protection, airflow guard, and visual accent all at once — a small part that makes a big difference in a custom setup.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 3D-printed grill restrict my fan's airflow?
Only minimally if it's designed correctly. Flarelab tunes the cutout pattern and rim thickness so the silhouette stays readable while leaving most of the fan opening clear. Expect a small drop in airflow compared to no grill, but no meaningful temperature impact for most builds.
What size PC fan does this grill fit?
The base design uses standard PC fan mounting points (commonly 120mm or 140mm). Flarelab can scale the model to other sizes — 80mm, 92mm, 200mm — by adjusting the frame and mount holes to your exact fan model.
How is the multi-color look achieved without painting?
The grill is split into separate parts and printed in different filament colors, then assembled together. This keeps the color edges crisp and avoids the time and skill required for hand-painting fine character details.
Will the screws strip the printed mount holes?
No, as long as the holes are reinforced. Flarelab adds extra wall thickness around mount points and uses a snug screw fit so the threads bite into the plastic. For frequent removal, brass heat-set inserts can be added for a metal-grade thread.
Can I get this in a different character or theme?
Yes. The frame design can hold any silhouette artwork. Flarelab regularly produces grills themed around anime characters, gaming icons, brand logos, or original artwork. Send a reference image to start the design.
How do I order a custom fan grill from Flarelab?
Visit flarelab.com to share your fan size, theme idea, and any reference artwork. The team will prepare the design, recommend a color split, and quote the project before printing.
