Print Your Halloween Candy Dispenser Now, Not in October

Halloween is nine weeks away, and that is exactly why makers are already firing up their printers. Over on Adafruit's weekly 3D printing livestream this week, one of the hosts was deep into designing a candy dispenser for the holiday — in August. If that feels early, it isn't. It's the single best habit a hobbyist printer can build.

Here's the math nobody thinks about until it's too late. A decent candy dispenser is a multi-part print: a hopper, a rotating drum or slide mechanism, a base, and usually a lid. On a standard 0.4 mm nozzle at 0.2 mm layer height, that's easily 12 to 20 hours of machine time. Then you test it, discover the candy jams because your chute angle is too shallow, tweak the model, and print again. Two or three revision cycles is normal for anything with moving parts. Suddenly your "weekend project" is a three-week project.

The second reason to start now is filament. Orange, purple, black and glow-in-the-dark spools sell out in October — every year, without fail. Seasonal colours are made in smaller batches than the everyday whites and greys, and when a whole hemisphere decides to print pumpkins in the same fortnight, restocks can't keep up. Buying your spool in late August costs the same as buying it in October, except it actually arrives.

To get started, pick a design with a simple gravity-fed mechanism rather than a spring or gear-driven one — fewer moving parts means fewer failure modes. Print the mechanism parts first as a standalone test before committing to the full body; you'll find tolerance problems in two hours instead of fifteen. PLA is fine for indoor use, but if the dispenser is going to sit on a porch in the sun, PETG will hold its shape better. Print the hopper walls at three perimeters minimum, because candy is surprisingly heavy in bulk, and sand or file any chute surface the sweets slide across so nothing catches.

Try it on your printer.
